The 2025 BMW M4’s Revised S58 Inline Six

Under the hood, the inline 6-cylinder power units deliver that classic high-revving BMW M experience. The S58B30T0 6-cylinder motor is available in three output levels, tailored to each drivetrain configuration. The new BMW M4 Coupe continues to offer the driver complete control of 473 hp via a precise 6-speed manual gearbox. At the next level, the BMW M4 Competition Coupe delivers a maximum output of 503 hp, and sends that power to the rear wheels via an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. At the top of the lineup, the M4 Competition xDrive Coupe and Convertible now produce 523 hp. It’s the first time that BMW has offered more power in an all wheel drive M car. The move is obviously due to the extra traction xDrive offers.

BMW M4

The engine‘s design features directly derive from motorsports and include the extremely stiff crankcase, which is manufactured in a sleeveless closed-deck design, the weight-reduced forged crankshaft and the iron coating, which is applied to the cylinder liners in an arc wire spraying process (AWSP). Manufactured in a 3-D printing process, the cylinder head core features an optimized routing of the coolant ducts, something that cannot be realized using conventional metal casting technology. In this way, both weight and temperature management are optimized.

The power upgrade takes the M4 Competition xDrive Coupe from 0-60 mph in just 3.4 seconds, while the new BMW M4 Competition xDrive Convertible does 3.6 seconds. No matter the drivetrain chosen, the new BMW M4 Coupe and the BMW M4 Convertible achieve an electronically limited maximum speed of 155 mph; however, when equipped with the optional M Driver’s Package, the top speed increases to 174 mph for the Convertible and 180 mph for the Coupe.

2025 BMW M4 Enhancements

Streamlined enhancements for the 2025 BMW M4 Coupe and Convertible also include:

  • Headlights & Taillights: Redesigned LED headlights and taillights with laser technology for a modern and sophisticated look. Vertical LED units serve as both daytime running lights and turn signals.
  • Exterior Design: The BMW roundel and M badge on Competition models now feature a high gloss black surround for a touch of elegance. Optional M design graphics in High Gloss Black or High Gloss Red for the hood and trunk lid offer a unique customization opportunity.
  • Interior Updates: The M leather multi-function steering wheel comes with a flat-bottomed rim, modified spokes, and a red stripe at 12 o’clock. An optional M Alcantara steering wheel is available, and both can be equipped with a heating function. Interior trims now come standard in a Dark Graphite matte finish, with additional options like Finely Polished Aluminium trim.
  • BMW Curved Display & Operating System 8.5: The high-resolution BMW Curved Display provides M-specific information, promoting a focused driving experience. The system, based on BMW Operating System 8.5, includes the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and supports touch and voice control. The 3-zone automatic climate control can be managed through touch control or voice commands, reducing the need for buttons and controls in the cockpit.
  • Ambient Lighting: The standard Ambient Lighting integrates contour lighting into the surrounds of the central air vents, creating a welcoming atmosphere. Various lighting scenarios, including Welcome and Goodbye, enhance the interior experience.
  • BMW Live Cockpit Professional: This standard feature includes the cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps and the BMW Head-up Display, projecting essential driving information with M-specific graphics onto the windscreen.

These updates bring together motorsports flair and advanced digitalization, delivering a refined and tech-forward driving experience for the BMW M4 Coupe and Convertible in 2025.
