The BMW Performance accessory catalog has gotten increasingly gaudy over the years. While BMW accessory design could be considered restrained and sophisticated well into the early 2010s, it’s increasingly more aligned with Autozone than the Autobahn. Unfortunately the new BMW M Performance parts for the 2023 M2 carry on this new tradition of head-scratching taste.
The center exhaust, the carbon fiber stick-on ornamentation and those bizarre graphics take a restrained modern M car to late-90’s Pontiac levels. Granted there are some performance benefits from the Titanium silencer in both weight and sound. In fact the soundtrack can be adjusted using the powertrain settings in the M Setup menu. And the M Performance Suspension is a coilover design with height-adjustable spring cups at the front and rear axle allowing the ride height to be lowered by up to 10 millimeters. And those 20″ forged wheels likely reduce unsprung mass and look great.
We obviously love BMW at BimmerFile and it pains us to call the brand out like this – especially M. But taste does matter for a brand. When you don’t have it, customers start to not trust your judgment and ultimately lose faith. And no one wants to see that – especially from the M brand.
But enough our opinion, let’s your hear yours. And let’s let BMW explain themselves with the official release.
Official Release: Sharpened appearance, enhanced performance: BMW M Performance Parts for the new BMW M2.
In addition to the sharpened appearance, the customisation options developed specifically for the new BMW M2 also optimise the impressive driving characteristics of the high-performance sports car. The striking add-on parts for the front, rear and sides of the compact two-door model are made of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP), which is sealed with a transparent coating to reveal the typical fibre structure of the material. Exterior components such as the M Performance Carbon front attachment, the M Performance Carbon side skirt attachments, the M Performance Carbon rear diffuser or the M Performance Carbon rear spoiler underscore the puristic racing genes of the new BMW M2, whilst also having a positive effect on its aerodynamic properties.
Sporty, ambitious drivers will also appreciate the wide range of BMW M Performance Parts in the areas of drive, chassis and cockpit. The M Performance Titanium silencer system, for example, not only saves eight kilograms in weight vs. the standard component, but also brings out the sound of the 338 kW/460 hp straight six-cylinder engine even more intensively. In the interior, the M Performance interior trims Carbon/Alcantara, the M Performance armrest Alcantara and many other high-quality options create a genuine sports car flair, while the M Performance knee pads Alcantara provide a secure grip even during sporty, ambitious driving. This allows you to fully enjoy the agility and cornering dynamics of the M Performance suspension on a closed-off track – or simply enjoy racing-inspired driving pleasure in everyday life.
