Living with the New Z4

MotoringFile Sections: E89 Z4 Roadster Jun 30th, 2009 3 Comments

BMW Z4

Tomorrow marks the start of our week with the 2010 Z4 35i. It’s a review we’ve been looking forward to more than anything since our M3 reviews from last year. Considering the type of reader at BF we also asked for (and received) a rare manual version of the car. From what we’re told almost all cars out there available for reviews are DCT only. While we at BF love the DCT transmission and would highly recommend them if that’s your preferred method, we can’t help but feel the Z4 deserved something a little old school added back to its character.

Look for photo updates throughout the next week culminating in a full review shortly after.

BMW to Introduce “City” in 2012

According to BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer (as interviewed by Car and Driver) the BMW brand will be launching it’s Project i variant by 2012. As we’ve reported previously the car will be available with all electric, hybrid, petrol and diesel powerplants. The car will be aimed for worldwide markets but will be designed with an eye towards the US market and California’s new Zero-Emission-Vehicle (ZEV) requirements that call for large-volume manufacturers to sell ZEVs by 2012.

Here’s an excerpt from the article:

Styling will be BMW-like, with short overhangs, a wide track, and a low roofline. Electricity will be stored in a water-cooled lithium-ion battery pack that is expected to provide a 100-mile range. Other versions of the City will get a gas or diesel engine and are being developed for Asian markets, particularly China. It hasn’t been decided whether the electric City will be badged as a Mini or a BMW. Reithofer also hinted that it may get a new name. BMW holds the rights to Riley and Triumph, but considering the reputation of electrical systems in British cars, redeploying those old names probably isn’t the best idea.

Details Emerge on the Next 3 Series

MotoringFile Sections: F30 3 Series Jun 29th, 2009 2 Comments

Once again one of our favorite public sources Scott27 has given usan overviewofan upcoming BMW product. Today he goes into relative detail around the completely redesigned 2012 3 Series. Here’s an excerpt from his post at GCZ:

“The proportions of a typical 3er, evident since the E36 through to the E46 and currently the E90 will remain meaning squat proportions, short rear overhang and wheels placed to each corner. The overall look is more slimmer and more toned than the E90.

1 Series – New Options & Engines for 2010

MotoringFile Sections: E81/82/E87 1 Series, Official News Jun 28th, 2009 1 Comment

In the US BMW will continue to only offer the 1 Series as a 128i and 135i.

Official Release: Entering the 2010 model year, the BMW 1 Series as the guarantee for the broad-scale impact of BMW EfficientDynamics and as the epitome of Sheer Driving Pleasure in the compact segment is gaining even greater significance. Two additional, extra-economical low-emission engine variants are enhancing the model range of the BMW 1 Series Coupé as of September 2009: In the guise of the BMW 120i Coupé and the BMW 118d Coupé there will then be two further models with the EU5 emission rating.

Following the successful launch of the new entry-level three-door and five-door models, the BMW 116i and the BMW 116d, in spring 2009, the BMW 1 Series is once again proving its value as the pacemaker for efficient mobility combined with outstanding driving pleasure in the compact class. Other new models as of September 2009 are the Lifestyle and Sport Editions of the BMW 1 Series three- and five-door.

135th BMW Delivery

MotoringFile Sections: Video Jun 27th, 2009 1 Comment

Few of us will ever come close to the 135 bimmers Klaus has owned, but it would be a nice feat to even achieve a third of them. This retired entrepreneur’s 135th BMW is none other than an ///M6. Not sure if that would be my choice but he more than likely has owned the rest of the fleet. (Edit)

2010 7 Series Updates (Including the M Sport)

MotoringFile Sections: F01 7 Series Jun 26th, 2009 4 Comments

Official Release: Following its successful introduction into the market, the new BMW 7 Series is further expanding its position in 2010 as the most innovative model series in the luxury segment. New drivetrain and equipment variants emphasise both the driving pleasure and the outstanding efficiency of BMW’s top-class luxury saloon.

The BMW 740d to be introduced in autumn, for example, will for the first time feature a new straight-six diesel engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and maximum output of 225 kW/306 hp. The second diesel model in the range, the BMW 730d, underlines its status as the world’s most economical and lowest emission model in the luxury class by a further reduction in both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions as well as optionally available BMW BluePerformance Technology. Hence, BMW now offers yet another production model already fulfilling the EU6 emission standard today.

80 years of BMW car production. The origins of EfficientDynamics.

MotoringFile Sections: EfficientDynamics, Official News Jun 24th, 2009 1 Comment

Official Release: Anybody who was not invited read it in the papers: On the morning of 9 July 1929 full-page ads informed the public that BMW had become a car maker. And guests invited to BMW’s new showroom in the middle of Berlin were able to admire a small car bearing the model designation 3/15 PS DA 2, with the two last letters standing for “Deutsche Ausführung” or “German Version”. In popular language the car nevertheless soon took on a new name, BMW’s first production model remaining a legend to this day as the “Dixi”.

The first of these attractive small performers coming off the production line on 22 March in BMW’s plant near the former Berlin-Johannisthal Airport set the foundation not only for the production of cars by BMW. For although the Dixi was largely taken over from an existing model with parts and components already in use, the car clearly bore the handwriting typical of BMW to this very day: From the beginning efficiency and dynamics were of utmost significance to BMW, forming an integral part of the brand’s DNA. Indeed, BMW had already made a great name for itself as a manufacturer of very economical high-performance products such as aircraft engines and motorcycles, before entering car production.

About BimmerFile

BimmerFile is dedicated to bringing you the most interesting news, links and reviews related to the BMW brand and it's vehicles.

We believe in the old school BMW ownership experience. We believe in garage nights with a six pack and some friends. We believe in 2002s, in E30 M3s and E34 540s with the 6 speed. We believe in progress in both design and engineering but we haven't lost sight of what made the brand and its products great all those years ago. And yes, we believe in the manual transmission.

We long for the days of the wave and for the days of roll-up windows. Yet we love the gadgets on the inside and the xenons on the outside.

In short, we can't get enough of BMWs. This is BimmerFile.
